A man recently had a miraculous escape from being crushed under the wheels of a Mahindra Thar ROXX. It was the ROXX driver's presence of mind and quick responses that saved a life in this case. A video of the incident, likely captured by a nearby CCTV, is now doing rounds on the internet.
This horrific crash occurred in Kerala's Calicut. The video shows a Black Mahindra Thar ROXX entering the scene, carrying a safe speed. A motorcycle can be seen passing by, as well. A scooter is seen sliding into the frame, the rider having completely lost control of the vehicle.
The rider, a resident of Kallachi, is soon thrown off its seat. He ended up under the SUV, almost touching its rear wheel, and narrowly avoiding getting crushed under. The SUV stopped just in time, thanks to the driver's presence of mind.
As it was later revealed, the scooter had collided with another vehicle first. This made it lose control, but was not captured on the camera. The video also shows the SUV hitting and running over the scooter's rear tyre, during the slide. This contact might have also helped it stop in time.
People soon rushed to the rescue. They pulled the man out. The Thar driver remains inside the vehicle and seems to be in shock. The victim was soon transferred to a hospital. Though he was injured, none of the wounds are serious, as per reports.
It remains which variant of the Thar ROXX was involved in this case. The higher variants pack a long list of safety features including Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). Going by the video, the driver is the one to thank here. Of course, luck is another!
Rain also seems to have had a hand in this incident. Wet roads might have made the scooter lose control and end up getting crushed by the SUV.
Bringing a vehicle to a complete halt on wet roads can be tricky. Technologies and equipment like ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) and EBD (Electronic Brakeforce Distribution) help in keeping the vehicle under control. The EBD, in particular, seems to have helped the ROXX driver in this case. It works together with ABS to better optimize braking performance on slippery surfaces.
In hard braking scenarios on wet roads, the ABS prevents wheel lock-ups and maintains the vehicle's stability. The EBD, on the other hand, increases efficiency by distributing brake-force to each of its wheels, based on available grip and traction. It minimizes stopping distance and ensures that minimal skidding happens on wet roads.
With EBD in play, the wheels with the most grip get the right amount of braking force. This shortens the stopping distance. It further helps the driver maintain steering control in tricky scenarios.
EBD systems use special sensors to monitor wheel speed and vehicle dynamics. It then does the math, comparing the wheel speed with the vehicle speed, engine rpm, road conditions, load in the vehicle and other parameters. Based on this analysis, it decides the optimum brake force that needs to be applied.
When you slam the brakes, the force is distributed to individual wheels based on their respective speeds. This ensures that the vehicle always remains in control. This can be particularly useful around corners and in other high-speed, low-traction scenarios.
These features are now becoming increasingly common in cars and SUVs. The government mandated the inclusion of these on all new cars and SUVs with effect from April 2019, as part of its larger vision to make our cars safer.
